Put Rachel facing the door, in a faint subtle effort to make her know that if he had only had enough money and had managed to finish the thesis, he might well have asked her to be his hostess and share her life with him.

About This Quote

The three-minute story, written by Franz Kafka, is a short story that is very important for understanding the writer and his work. The story begins with a young man named Karl Rossmann writing a thesis at the University of Vienna. At first, he considers his dissertation to be a problem of language and only writes about the meaning of the word “das mann” (the man) in German. But as he writes, he also writes about other things: first about his family and his father’s job as a clerk and then about other things and then other things and then other things and then other things.

The three minute story ends with Karl Rossmann deciding that he should put himself in another time and place: he should imagine himself as one of those men who wrote everything they experienced on paper or as one of those men who used to write everything as they hear it as if it were taking place at this very moment. He should imagine himself as someone who writes everything down.
